Changthang region trek

Trek highlights
Korzok, the final destination of our trek, is situated at 15,000 feet (4,572 m) near the shore of the great Tso Moriri, a large trans-Himalayan salt lake. With its dozen or so houses and its gompa appearing like a mirage among the barren hills, it is the only permanent settlement in Rupshu. The surrounding vast expanse of open space is home to the Chang-pa, the Changthang nomadic herdsmen, who converge on Tso Moriri in their endless cycle of wander in search fodder for their herds of yaks and goats. In general this fine trek into the magnificent landscape of Changthang is without terrain hardship, however, thirteen days in high elevations, including the crossing of two passes over 5400 meters (Kyamayuri La, 5410m and Yalung Nyau La, 5440m) make it at times a difficult trek. The first part is a gradual walk up to Tirido, a little hamlet about two hours away from the trailhead. Next couple of days, however, are the most strenuous of the trek involving many steep ascents. Thereafter the trek becomes a pleasant hike with wonderful encounters of the Tibetan plateau nomads. The tour includes visiting most of Ladakh's finest monasteries, including Likir, Alchi, Shey, Thikse and Hemis and belongs rightfully among the most fascinating tours of Ladakh. Map below!

Itinerary:

Day 1

Early morning flight from Delhi to Leh, transfer to hotel and rest.

Day 2

Morning sightseeing - Shanti Stupa, and Sangkar Gompa; lunch at hotel, afternoon rest.

Day 3

Sightseeing around Sham, the lower part of Ladakh, visiting the Likir and Alchi monasteries.

Day 4

Leh to Kyungyam by jeep, en route visit Shey, Thikse and Hemis monasteries. Great ride including visits of the famous monasteries high above Indus. Overnight in camp at Kyungyam.

Day 5

Trek Kyungyam – Tirido. This is a simple and short trek following a jeep road, about three hours only, intended most for acclimatization.

Day 6

Tirido to Trihpu, 4 hours. Hard day steeply up a narrow gorge via Tiri village to Tiri phu.

Day 7

Tiriphu to Stazurmo. Once again a tiring walk but no passes.

Day 8

Stazurmo to Thaksang via Thaksang La, 5090m. Thaksang is called a pass but is merely a small hill, although its altitude reaches over 5000m, affording a great view of the Tibetan plateau.

Day 9

Thaksang to Pangunagu, 4 to 5 hours. Easy walk down enjoying the scenery of the Kar Lake ahead.

Day 10

Pangunagu to Nuruchan, 4 to 5 hours. Pleasant walk most of the way along the lake.

Day 11

Nuruchan to Rachunkaru, 4 hours. This is the shortest day of the trek allowing for numerous stops to meet the nomadic people, great vistas along the entire way.

Day 12

Rachunkaru to Gyama, 5 to 6 hours. Great day of trekking over Kyamayuri La (5410m) and Kartse La with fine views of snow peaks.

Day 13

Gyama to Korzok, 6 to 7 hours. Final day on the trek leads over Yalung Nyau La (5440m), the highest pass on this route, offering stunning views of lake Moriri. Reaching the great Tso Moriri, we enter the gathering region of the nomads.

Day 14

Return from Korzok to Leh by jeep.

Day 15

Full day of rest in Leh, sightseeing on your own.

Day 16

Return flight to Delhi; depart India.
