RAJASTHAN'S PUSHKAR CAMEL FAIR (November)
Experience one of India’s most fascinating festivals,
the annual Pushkar Fair in Rajasthan. Every year,
thousands of Rajasthani village converge in this
picturesque town to buy and sell camels and other
cattle. They come for the entertaining camel-races and
local circuses. Crowds of village folk also browse the
local markets for camel saddles, textiles, glass
bangles, and silver jewelry. They wash away the day’s
fatigue at the Pushkar Lake. Beyond the bustle of the market is the sweeping
expanse of desert, dotted with thousands of camping
families. All around, there is a riot of color and
throng of warm, joyous faces.
Pushkar is located on the
edge of the desert, 11km away from Ajmer but in between
lies Nag Pahar, the Snake Mountain, and the road passes
through the Aravalli hills. Situated near the Pushkar
Lake, the city as the lake are considered to be a sacred
by the Hindus from all over the world. Often referred to
as Tirth Raj (the king of all pilgrimages), Pushkar Lake
is said to have been formed when Brahma dropped a lotus
from heaven. The lake is consecrated to him, as is a
nearby temple once thought to be the only temple of Lord
Brahma in India. In terms of sanctity the lake is second
only to Mansarovar on the Tibetan plateau, and it is a
major pilgrimage destination throughout the year. There
are many bathing Ghats as it is an important pilgrimage
centre for Hindus.
The Camel Fair
takes place every year in the picturesque town of Pushkar. Pushkar is located 150 km from Jaipur and is a
3 hour 30 minutes drive on a comfortable highway.
Tented Camps are erected during the Pushkar Fair as the
town does not have enough hotels to accommodate the
large number of tourists who visit the festival.
