Kolkata Tours Overview
Take a tour of the Bengal Club, the oldest social club
in Calcutta. Listen to a brief history talk of the city
and its art and culture by a prominent historian.
Sample a three course
Bengali meal, then embark on a visit to the Victoria
Memorial, a tribute to the late Queen Victoria, and view
its collection of oil paintings, photographs and
displays on the history of the city, as well as
galleries housing exhibits by local artists, sculptors
and photographers.
Take a boat cruise up the
River Hoogly and sail past Belur Math, the headquarters
of The Ramakrishna Mission, and under Kolkata's two
famous bridges, Howrah and Vidyasagar.
Alternative tours offer Heritage Walk of Dalhousie
Square, now an UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the walk
you'll marvel at the magnificent Governor’s House, Charnock Mausoleum, and the former headquarters of the
infamous East India Company. The experience takes you
back to the 18th and 19th century when the British ruled
the entire subcontinent from Calcutta, at that time
considered the most fashionable city in the world after
London.
You can also have a breakfast at Bomti’s, a residence of
Mr. Surojit ‘Bomti’ Iyenger, an art collector and
socialite, his dwelling being one the most interesting
heritage buildings on historic Chowringhee. At
Bomti's you will enjoy an authentic home-cooked Bengali
meal served up with hot cups of fresh Darjeeling tea and
stimulating insights into Bengali Art.
After lunch continue to the Victoria Memorial, then
enjoy shopping for local handicrafts. Last embark on a
cruise up Hoogly River.
Yet another walking tour offers North Calcutta Heritage
Building with Probol Deb, one of the members of the Sow
Bazaar Royal family who will take you to visit their old
family mansion. This walk takes you to the narrow alleys
of the “Black Town” where a parallel culture to the
British arose amongst the pioneering Bengali families
whose fortunes grew as they assisted their colonial
rulers in their quest to rule the subcontinent. The
impressive mansions hold some rare treasures and
interesting stories.
You may also visit the
home, and now University, of the famous Bengali Nobel
Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore.
You will also visit
Kumartuli, the “potters” market, where all the idols for
religious festivals in the city are made.
Tours can also be structured to include a visit to a
textile factory to observe Rangeen weaving, printing and
dyeing, a well-known Weavers Studio in Calcutta.
In the evening you can
visit the Sound and Light Show at the Victoria Memorial.
All in all the tours are flexible and based on your
interests we can let you choose from a number of
destinations and programs, including a visit to the
Botanical Gardens, the Park Street Cemetery, Charitable
institutions and schools.

the Tollygunge Club or the Royal Calcutta Turf Club.

contemporary Bengal art, antique furniture, and variety
of local bazaars.

Indian Museum, the Asiatic Society, Tea Auction Centre,
the Calcutta Horse Races. The Royal Calcutta Turf Club,
with its panoramic views of Victoria Memorial and the
River Hoogly, is indeed one of the oldest and grandest
in India and the ambience is positively ‘Raj’. Only in
Kolkata!
